Abstract

RODRIGUEZ RODRIGUEZ, María del Carmen; RODRIGUEZ SARMIENTO, Juan Vicente; VERA SANTOS, Carmen  and  GARCIA ISASI, Lidia. Prevalence of the hepatitis B in normal and specific blood donors in the provincial bank of Matanzas. Rev. Med. Electrón. [online]. 2012, vol.34, n.5, pp. 548-555. ISSN 1684-1824.

We carried out a crossed, descriptive research in normal blood and plasma specific donors of the Provincial Blood Bank of Matanzas with previous immunization or not by means of the Herbiovac vaccine during the period between January 2009 and December 2010. Our purpose was analyzing the prevalence of hepatitis B positivity through serologic markers screening, differentiating the positivity in the normal blood and plasma specific donors and identifying the behavior of variables like age and genre of the patients that are reactive to the surface antigen. We obtained the following results: the prevalence of positives decreased in 2010 in relation with 2009; no reactive samples were found in the plasmapheresis; 71,7 % of the positive cases were male; the eldest age group was the 36-45 years-old one with 1,5 % of reactivity. This research allows us to affirm that there is a low prevalence of reactivity to the surface antigen among the blood donors of the territory covered by the Provincial Blood Bank of Matanzas, like the results at the national level. Applying a good selection of the donors and using the pre-donation counseling favor the decrease of the positivity in blood donors. The results obtained for the plasmapheresis show the vaccine effectiveness to reach the immunization against the hepatitis B.
