Abstract

Introduction: In 1969, the WHO call drug to "those substance that introduced in a live organism may to modify one o some of its functions". Drug addiction is the result of a progressive establishment of pharmacological tolerance and physical and psychic dependences. Objective: To describe the behavior of drug addicts treated by elective surgery in Falcón municipality, Falcón State, Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela to look for appropriate solutions during October, 2007-2008. Method: A cross-sectional, descriptive and observational study was conducted in all patients seen in "Josefa Camejo" Medical Center of Integral Diagnosis of Barrio Adentro Mission, Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela under general, regional of combined anesthesia from October, 2007 to October, 2008. Results: During the preoperative medication and in perioperative period high blood pressure and arrhythmias were present, as well as and base acid disorders of hydromineral equilibrium. There was not suppression syndrome and only the presence of arterial hypotension in the 12.50 %. Conclusions: Drug consumers are as high risk group with deep and diverse cardiovascular and neurologic manifestations during the postoperative period, thus, the knowledge of anesthesiologist in its management is very important.
