Abstract

HECTOR, Elvira  and  GRANDA, Josefina. Notes on the History of Ophthalmology Teaching in Cienfuegos: 1961-2011. Medisur [online]. 2013, vol.11, n.4, pp. 422-430. ISSN 1727-897X.

History allows travelling back in time to more distant decades. This travel may be interesting for various generations, and thus, the need of knowing their roots is met. Since the origins of medicine, Ophthalmology emerged as a very rudimentary medical practice performed by priests, physicians, surgeons or other less qualified individuals, and consequently we only know what was done during Antiquity. As there is scarce literature on the history of Ophthalmology teaching in the province of Cienfuegos, this article aims at providing an account of teaching of this specialty in the province from 1961 to date, emphasizing on changes throughout the revolutionary period which begins with the political-administrative division of the country. It encompasses the creation of training centers for technical studies, bachelor’s degree programs in Optics and Optometry, medical specialists of the area in the new province and the opening of the Ophthalmic Surgery Center, equipped with the most modern techniques.

Keywords : oftalmology; teaching; history of medicine.
