PASCUAL GONZALEZ, Aylín  and  PENA DIAZ, Jorge. Open spaces for public use. Arquitectura y Urbanismo [online]. 2012, vol.33, n.1, pp. 25-42. ISSN 1815-5898.

The presence of Open Spaces for Public Use (OSPU) has become more and more diverse and gets higher relevance. The rise of the quality of the OSPU contributes to promote well designed, comfortable inhabitable areas with a high environmental value that will contribute to the development of sustainable cities. The present article shows a methodology for the classification of the Open Spaces for Public Use based on an integral approach which comprises the morpho-typological, functional, socio- psychological and ecosystem dimensions (urban ecosystem) taking into consideration the relationship between man and his environment, defined by the interaction among physical, psychological and socio-cultural elements. A definition of Open Space for Public Use and the variables and indicators that characterized it are also presented. The methodological approach presents a proposal of a spatial relationship model that integrates a system which illustrates, in a graphic way, the different selected aspects for an analysis and the interrelations among them. The result is an optimal association of the elements which includes relationship between man and his environment

Keywords : Open spaces; typology; spatial model of relationships; man’s relationship with the environment.
