Abstract

PEREZ DEL HOYO, Raquel. Benalúa of Alicante: the identity of a transformed neighborhood reconsidered from the present time. Arquitectura y Urbanismo [online]. 2012, vol.33, n.2, pp. 24-46. ISSN 1815-5898.

This article describes the evolution of the Benalúa neighborhood in Alicante, Spain, one of the most unique and valued areas of the city. This is the case of a residential neighborhood which has completely transformed its original image. The article presents a global chronological reading that spans from the conception and first consolidation of the neighborhood (1883-1900) to present time (2011). Summing up, an identification and a description of the key elements that have favored the keeping of neighborhood’s identity in the complex adaptation and in the changing process to new demands and urban needs are pointed out; qualities that exclusively and directly come from the urban planning and validity of the neighborhood project. Some of the materials studied in the course of research are included, mostly unpublished and wide graphic content, with special emphasis on construction projects.

Keywords : urbanism; urban transformation; urban planning; architectural heritage.
