Abstract

HERRERA PUPO, Gerson. Sugar cane Agro-industries Concentrations. Conditioning factors of territorial consolidation. Arquitectura y Urbanismo [online]. 2014, vol.35, n.1, pp. 35-47. ISSN 1815-5898.

A variety of singular factors have shaped the development of the Cuban sugar industry, and they have left distinct regional imprints across the island. Camaguey, one of the most under-populated provinces at the turn of the 20th century, had unique regional geographic conditions that contributed to the growth of sugar-cane production. This paper identifies those conditions as they shaped the construction of sugar mills and their surrounding hinterlands. Clusters of sugar-cane production are identified through traditional archival work and graphic analysis. Findings show a clear pattern of axes of growth which gave structure to the province.

Keywords : sugar mill concentrations; conditioning factors; axes of growth; Camaguey.
