Abstract

ZARDOYA LOUREDA, María Victoria  and  MARRERO OLIVA, Marisol. Havana's First Cinemas. Arquitectura y Urbanismo [online]. 2014, vol.35, n.2, pp. 36-48. ISSN 1815-5898.

During the first quarter of the twentieth century, cinema-going became one of the most popular leisure activities for the inhabitants of Havana. Initially films were projected in specially adapted pre-existing spaces, houses in particular, while the fist purpose-built cinemas also began to appear. In general, the latter did not differ from the old theatres in terms of appearance and space organization. This article traces the beginnings of this new architectural function, through an analysis of seventy-seven cinema theatres of Havana, most of which have survived to this day. It has been possible to unearth information on forty-five of these buildings through research in primary sources.

Keywords : cinemas; theaters.
