Abstract

Cuba: Fertility, GDP and average real wage. Rev Nov Pob [online]. 2014, vol.10, n.19, pp. 84-103. ISSN 1817-4078.

The fertility decline in Cuba, of an accelerated and secular nature, and the subsequent contraction of the multiplicative capacity of the population, have now become objects of attention of various social and political actors, including certainly the Cuban demographers, who had been warning about it since more than three decades. What is most outstanding in the process of fertility transition in the country is undoubtedly the abruptness of its onset, the speed with which elapsed, and the lack of economic development that accompanied it. Hence, the debate today focuses on the instrumentality of the different determinants that lead that transition, and especially the role played by economic factors in the different stages, particularly in those situations in which people had to perform life activities in conditions of sharp vulnerability due to crises. Therefore, the intention is to provide elements that contribute to the complete knowledge about the state of the fertility-development relationship today.

Keywords : fertility; demographic transition; fertility-development.
