Abstract

TRINQUETE DIAZ, Dixie Edith. Counting the population: Mediations for the communication of demographic dynamics. Rev Nov Pob [online]. 2021, vol.17, n.33, pp. 245-273.  Epub Nov 15, 2021. ISSN 1817-4078.

The paper deals the analysis of links between demographic science and communication, essential for the understanding, promotion and transformation of any social project. In Cuba, with an accelerated, early and complete demographic transition and very low fertility indicators that are directly impacting the age structure of the population, integrated views are urgently needed from many social spaces, including those of the press. The main results derived from research carried out between 2011 and 2020 on the process of construction of communication about population in the Cuban press are systematized and, based on them, the actuation of cultural and political mediations is described. Among the most important findings are the theoretical articulation of communication on population, born in the environment of demographic sciences, with more recent reflections on Communication theories, an important starting point for understanding the communication-population relationship in the Cuban case, and its aplication to COVID-19 enviroments.

Keywords : Communication on population; demographic dynamics; mediations; risk perception; COVID-19.
