Abstract

ARAUJO GONZALEZ, Rafael. An approach to death due to COVID-19 in Cuba. Rev Nov Pob [online]. 2021, vol.17, n.34, pp. 1-28.  Epub Dec 01, 2021. ISSN 1817-4078.

For the development of this study, the daily data of confirmed cases and reported deaths of COVID-19 from March 11, 2020 to August 17, 2021, recorded by the 15 provinces and 168 municipalities, according to months, and by groups five years old were used. From March 11, 2020 until now, the Public Health`s Secretarship has followed up on the epidemic establishing a periodization in correspondence with the characteristics of each stage. In addition, this study establishes its own periodization in correspondence with the change and acceleration of the number of cases and deaths in each stage, calculating the lethality and mortality for each stage, and according to months. Differentials were also calculated by five-year age groups, by provinces and municipalities, and finally an estimate was made of the impact of mortality from Covid19 on the first causes of death in Cuba in 2021. For a better understanding of this study, it is explained the difference between lethality and mortality, terms that in common language can be confused and sometimes even considered synonymous.

Keywords : confirmed cases; lethality; mortality; differentials and mortality`s estimation.
