Abstract

RODRIGUEZ GARCIA, Arianna; MORA PEREZ, Arelis Rosalén  and  AJA DIAZ, Antonio. Güira de Melena: Socioeconomic behavior and its interrelation with the characteristics of the physical environment and the population. Period 2012-2018. Rev Nov Pob [online]. 2021, vol.17, n.34, pp. 250-278.  Epub Dec 01, 2021. ISSN 1817-4078.

The objective of this article is to analyze the socioeconomic behavior of the Güira de Melena municipality in the 2012-2018 period. The results presented show that the productive activities subsystem is determined, fundamentally, by the performance of agricultural work, giving the agrarian character to the economic structure of the municipality. The production of various crops stands out. It obtained high productions with an upward trend in the analyzed period. Regarding the use of land, it has remained constant, as temporary crops predominate, not being so the forms of tenure, since in the analyzed stage the dissolution of one of the three UBPCs took place. It is also evident the interrelation of this subsystem with the physical and sociodemographic subsystems in an agricultural municipality, with an aging population, with sustained low levels of fertility and that its workforce comes from the eastern region of the country. These studies are of vital importance for the design of policies that are in accordance with the existing reality in the municipalities and not to mechanically reproduce the experiences of other scenarios, which too often respond to or are based on alien realities, transformed into imported action models. It shows the importance of knowing the socioeconomic behavior to bear in mind the endogenous capacities of the territories in development strategies. In addition, it expresses the value of inserting the population as an object and subject of territorial and local development.
