Introduction:

Health facilities are complex organizations that cannot be understood or addressed by traditional management paradigms. Therefore it is necessary that, from the organization, an analysis of its complexity is made to allow its managers and members to adapt to change, meet their objectives and grow as institutions.

Objective:

To analyze the Centro Hospitalario Universitario del Instituto de Medicina Tropical "Pedro Kourí" from the perspective of the theory of complexity.

Development:

This health facility since its foundation, because of its missions and the world health context, is a complex system. Confronting new epidemics and national and international economic tensions requires frequent reordering of services to efficiently respond to the fulfillment of its missions, adjusting services and planned tasks, which results in a different organization.

Conclusions:

Understanding the complexity of the Centro Hospitalario Universitario del Instituto de Medicina Tropical "Pedro Kourí" is essential for its analysis, comprehension and organization in order to achieve a better and more efficient approach to the clinical, teaching and research tasks that concern them. Facing the challenges that are generated under the paradigm of complexity gives way to improvement, growth and successful management.
