Abstract

Background: the education in values is a pedagogical condition that has been kept in the formation of the public health human resources, in spite of the massive registrations. Objective: to analyze the criteria given by the medical students while phasing two moral dilemmas which represent a conscious expression of their own values. Methods: a descriptive cross-sectional study based on observations was carried out in the Faculty II of Santiago de Cuba University of Medical Sciences in the academic year 2009-2010. The study population comprised 204 students of the first year medicine career and the sample comprised 60 students chosen in a simple randomized way. Theoretical methods were used, among them: analysis-synthesis, induction-deduction. Empirical methods were also used in the application of the pedagogical technique moral dilemmas, so as to elaborate the personal judgments of the students in reference to different values. Mathematical methods: For absolute and relative values. Results: it could be stated that some values like responsibility, respect for life, honesty, collectivism and loyalty have not been completely internalized by the students. Conclusions: this study indicated the necessity to increase and complete the work with these values, so as to guaranty the formation of a health professional with a solid ethical formation.
