Abstract

Background: the determination of the learning necessities is indispensable to be able to guarantee the quality of the professional upgrading programs in any of its variants, including the postgraduate courses. Objective: to identify the learning necessities in the residents of Psychiatry graduated in the academic years from 2012-2013 up to 2014-2015. Methods: it was carried out a descriptive investigation within the qualitative approach, in the field of the medical sciences, specifically in the postgraduate area of "Ph.D. Luis San Juan Pérez" teaching Psychiatric Hospital of Villa Clara Province. Methods of the theoretical level were used: analytic-synthetic and inductive-deductive, and empiric ones: the survey in interview form was applied to the post graduate students, professors and executives to identify the learning necessities. Results: there were identified as the main necessities: few abilities in the psychotherapeutic practice, lack of basic knowledge in the Anatomy and Physiology of the nervous system to understand certain cerebral metabolic processes that sustain in a great extent the psychopharmacological bases, absence of juridical knowledge, little training to assume other functions different from the assistance, such as teaching, researching and managerial ones, lack of abilities in the indication and interpretation of psychometric tests to define diagnoses in the specialty and deficiencies in the elaboration of mental health diagnoses. Conclusions: learning necessities were identified in the post graduate satudents in the evaluated courses in regard to basic and specific knowledge of the specialty that affect the understanding of certain psychical processes, and methodological deficiencies to assume certain teaching, researching and managerial, functions.
