Abstract

RODRIGUEZ HERNANDEZ, Mabel et al. Motivations and professional expectations of students in the fifth year of the medical career. EDUMECENTRO [online]. 2016, vol.8, n.4, pp. 130-146. ISSN 2077-2874.

Background: conflicts in the volitional, cognitive-behavioral and motivational sphere are issues that affect young people who enter universities medical sciences at present. Objective: to present he motivations and expectations as future professionals of fifth year students of the medical career. Methods: a longitudinal descriptive research was carried out at Villa Clara University of Medical Sciences during the academic year 2013-2014, to expose the main motivations for fifth graders of the Medicine career and expectations upon graduation. Theoretical methods were applied for the foundation of the research, and empirical methods were applied: document review and application of survey in questionnaire form; the data were processed using descriptive statistics. Results: predominance of Cuban female students was found, most of them are not relatives of MDs, so this was not a determining factor for admission, and the main reasons for choosing the career were humanitarian. Humanism, responsibility, professional ethics and moral values were referred to as the most necessary for health professionals. Among the key growth expectations stand out: the aspiration to fulfill internationalist mission and enroll a direct specialty and that of Comprehensive General Medicine. Conclusions: the main motivations that influenced the selection of the career were determined, as well as the expectations of students of fifth year medical career as future health professionals.
