Abstract

Background: determining learning needs that affect competence and performance in odontological emergency care, ensures that it can be planned with more quality and social relevance in the post-graduates professional upgrading. Objective: to identify the learning needs presented by dentists regarding patient care related to patients in a dental emergency in the health area of the municipality of Cruces, Cienfuegos. Methods: a cross-sectional, analytical, exploratory research work, from September 2015 and March 2016 was performed to identify learning needs in18 dentists of Cruces. For this theoretical methods were used: analysis-synthesis and induction-deduction; Empirical ones: survey in questionnaire form, direct observation and a written exam of the objective test type; and mathematics for absolute and relative values. Results: nonessential and essential omissions were detected that do not cause iatrogenic, related to communication and personal interaction, informed consent, non-delivery of medications or written orders and others, ie gaps in basic knowledge and skills about odontological emergency care patients. Conclusions: the difficulties found in competence in relation to the application of knowledge and skills as well as performance to confront and solve problems in patients with odontological emergency care, allowed to meet the needs of post-graduate professional upgrading.
