Abstract

Background: vocational training centers have accumulated great experience with the application of psycho pedagogical modalities, among them the vocational training groups, as real children's community projects. Objective: to implement a community vocational training project through the "For a Happy Smile" vocational training group of the "Josué País García" elementary school in Camagüey, with third year students of Odontology from the University of Medical Sciences. Methods: a participatory action research work was carried out, from January 2015 to May 2016. Theoretical methods were used, among them: analysis-synthesis and induction-deduction to obtain the information and conclusions reaching; Empirical ones: survey in questionnaire form to the participants in the vocational training group; and mathematics: the data were processed by an Intel Core l3 computer, with Windows 7 and the SPSS 11.5 statistical program. The conformation of the vocational training group was developed in four stages. Results: most of the members of the group are female, they increased their knowledge on the Odontology profession and hygienic-oral habits considerably, while showing acceptance, interest and motivation in the activities. For the students of Odontology involved in the project represented a greater vocational training and orientation towards the profession since they carried out health prevention and promotion actions in the community environment. Conclusions: the community children project through the vocational training group turned out to be a successful psycho-pedagogical modality, due to the results achieved, both for children and the Odontology students involved.
