Abstract

BETANCOURT TORRES, Isis. Diseases and their impact in the work of geniuses of the fine arts. EDUMECENTRO [online]. 2017, vol.9, n.2, pp. 76-92. ISSN 2077-2874.

Background: diseases have always accompanied alive beings, their links with history and art, far from being forced; they show a close a relationship since ancient times to current times. Objective: to identify the relationship between diseases and the artistic creation, deepening in the life and work of a group of artists: musicians, painters and writers. Methods: an observational descriptive study was carried out on the life and work of50 artists. Theoretical methods were used starting from the study of each artist's biography and a bibliographical review of several texts of arts history. As empiric methods: the documental analysis and individual interviews to personalities of the Cuban culture and university professors, experts on the topic. Results: the diseases they suffered from are analyzed in the work and a reflection is made on the impact of their ailments in their works. The infectious diseases, among them, tuberculosis and syphilis; madness and other psychiatric states as depression, melancholia and bipolar disorders, they appear as the most frequent. Conclusions: the results of this study evidenced a close relationship between diseases and artistic creation. It contributes to increase the cultural wealth of professors and students in general, it awakes the interest for these topics and it serves as a contribution to the purpose of transforming Cuba into a huge university for all.
