Professional guidance is essential for the development of society, especially in the current transformations of the Cuban health system. The present work aims to reflect on the subject emphasizing the need for its training and development in students of medical sciences and the challenge this work represents for teachers. The historical-social background of professional guidance is presented, it is theorized upon vocation and professional guidance concepts, examples are given about the implementation of the strategy at Villa Clara University of Medical Sciences and the responsibility of teachers, whose preparation must have as a starting point the exemplarity achieved on the basis of pedagogical prestige, expressed in the quality of the classes they teach, the daily work in the different training settings, especially, in-service training; And the human and revolutionary values required by the profession.
