Abstract

Background: the teaching of the English language plays an important role in the training of health professionals and technicians. Objective: to design methodological actions for the development of the writing ability in the English for specific purposes cycle, in medical sciences. Methods: a development research was carried out at Villa Clara University of Medical Sciences, from January 2015 to December 2016. Theoretical methods were used: historical-logical, analytical-synthetic, inductive-deductive and systemic-structural, and as empirical methods, the documentary analysis of the texts English Through Medicine 1 and 2; observation, interview to key informants, pedagogical test, and statistical-mathematical methods. Results: the exercises in the textbooks do not practice the ability to write as a process, but oriented to the product; There were insufficiencies in the knowledge of the methodological foundations to develop it in most of the professors, and difficulties in the students to write texts, for which methodological actions were designed which were valued by the criteria of specialists. Conclusions: the actions guide adequately towards the proper development of the aforementioned skill and contribute to the final objective of the graduate; they were valued by the specialists consulted as relevant, applicable, with a methodological approach and with possibilities of generalization due to their didactic conception and logical structure.
