Abstract

Background:

there is a lack of uniform criteria for the assessment of Orthodontic residents in the end-of-year and state practical examinations in the different years of academic training of the specialty.

Objective:

to design assessment guides for the practical activities of the end-of-year and state exams that complement the study plan of the Orthodontics specialty.

Methods:

a development research was carried out, within the qualitative approach, at Villa Clara University of Medical Sciences Dentistry Faculty from 2017 to 2019. Theoretical and empirical methods were used: documentary analysis of the study plan, interviews with teachers, and focal and nominal groups to obtain the leading ideas and search for consensus; the evaluation guides were evaluated through the criteria of specialists.

Results:

the diagnosis made allowed to verify that an official model is not established to assess the practical activities neither in the end-of-year exams, nor in the state one, in the residents of Orthodontics, which can vary the evaluation criteria. Assessment guides were designed for this purpose, in which different indicators to be achieved according to the objectives of the program are detailed, to which certain scores are assigned in order to achieve greater fairness.

Conclusions:

the assessment guides designed complement the study plan of the specialty and were accepted by the specialists who assessed their relevance, usefulness and feasibility of application, in order to achieve congruence between the evaluation criteria in both the end-of-year and state exams.
