Abstract
ORTIZ TORRES, Emilio Alberto. Historical-cultural approach in cuban educational research. From tradition to traditionalism. Universidad y Sociedad [online]. 2021, vol.13, n.1, pp. 89-95. Epub Feb 02, 2021. ISSN 2218-3620.
The use of the cultural-historical approach as a theoretical basis for educational research in Cuba is a valuable, relevant and effective tradition from the second half of the 20th century to the present, as it has contributed to the improvement of Cuban education. Researchers have not only relied on it, but have also contributed to its enrichment, with innovative theoretical and methodological elements contextualized to the social and cultural reality of the country. However, the tradition has become a traditionalism due to its superficial ways of implementation, which focus only on assuming it as a statement of principles and approach some of its core concepts only in a formal way. This article analyzes the deficiencies of this traditionalism as an epistemological problem, which affects the accuracy of scientific results as well as their practical and educational value. Among the main causes are the accelerated training of new educational researchers, which focuses on quantitative goals and disregard the need for a background scientific culture that can only be consolidated over time. Also worth mentioning is the lack of interest among academics in conducting a systematic debate on the epistemological, theoretical and methodological requirements for the application of the cultural-historical approach.
