Inappropriate use of WhatsApp messaging application has harmful effects on the health of employees. This research was conducted at the University of Guayaquil in Ecuador. The objective of this research is to demonstrate the relationship between inappropriate use of WhatsApp in work communication and work overload and professional burnout syndrome in university teachers. This study follows a quantitative approach through a descriptive, correlational and cross-sectional methodology. From the information collected, by means of a questionnaire answered by a total of 305 teachers, it was possible to verify the research hypotheses put forth in this work. The results confirm a significant association between the inappropriate use of WhatsApp in work communication and work overload. Secondly, the relationship between the levels of work overload perceived by teachers and professional burnout syndrome is confirmed. These results emphasize on the importance of using technological applications to achieve effective communication, the lack of which may have negative consequences that are manifested in the institutional environment and in particular, in the health of Higher Education teachers of this Institution in Ecuador.
