The productive chains approach has been considered in recent years an important element for the development of companies, both for developed and developing countries. However, all the necessary aspects required by this form of organization of production and services that transform it into advantages for the development of organizations and territories are not known. Hence the importance and relevance of this bibliographical review research, which constitutes a partial result of a doctoral research. Correspondingly, it is presented with the objective of systematizing theoretical aspects about productive chains and their contribution to sustainable development. The analysis of the contents presented here is carried out based on the outstanding and most approved criteria found in the bibliography studied on the subject under study. As a result of the study, the main defining elements of the term production chains are identified, as well as the dimensions of sustainable development pertinent to this research, which made it possible to determine a set of determining factors that serve as the basis for evaluating the sustainability of production chains.
