SORIA ACOSTA, Alina Rosa; RODRIGUEZ PLASENCIA, Adisnay; CABRERA CAPOTE, Mayrenis  and  MEDINA NARANJO, Gloria Rebeca. Prevalence and etiology of acute appendicitis in the Iess hospital of Latacunga. Universidad y Sociedad [online]. 2021, vol.13, n.6, pp. 543-547.  Epub Dec 10, 2021. ISSN 2218-3620.

Appendicitis is the most common cause of acute abdominal pain or surgical abdominal pain. The inflammatory process begins when the only permeable end of the appendix becomes occluded. This research aimed to determine the prevalence and etiology of appendicitis in patients treated at the IESS Latacunga Basic Hospital. The methodology was quali-quantitative, with a non-experimental design, a cross-sectional diagnosis, with action-research elements, the technique was the systematic observation of the medical records of patients diagnosed with acute appendicitis. The results obtained showed that the age group from 17 to 30 years prevailed with 69.05% of the cases with the highest incidence in the male gender. Fecaliths are located in first place with 74.42%, followed by tumors with 9.46% as the main causes or etiology that led to acute abdominal symptoms, 83.38% underwent open appendectomies which require 3 to 4 postoperative days. It is evidenced that cases continue to be recorded that increase over time with more recurrent etiology due to fecaliths due to eating disorder. The surgery performed in most patients is open appendectomy with a long postoperative time.
