Abstract

PETERSSON ROLDAN, Maritza; MARRERO MARRERO, Mercedes  and  MONZON ALDANA, Yenisleidys. An economic assessment of cultural ecosystem services. A study case of Matanzas bay. Universidad y Sociedad [online]. 2022, vol.14, n.1, pp. 87-96.  Epub Feb 10, 2022. ISSN 2218-3620.

In Cuba, the economic assessment of ecosystem services is a subject that is rarely addressed, both in theory and in practice, and even less discussed are the valuation studies of cultural ecosystem services. The present research aims to economically value the cultural ecosystem services of the Matanzas Bay. A better understanding of this economic value will allow the bay to be considered as an economically productive system, being in turn recognized the cultural values associated with it, which allows it to be placed on the conservation and development agendas of decision-makers and those who use these services. This investigation applied the contingent valuation method. The information generated yielded important results such as the definition of the bay's ecosystem services, the estimated benefit generated by cultural ecosystem services to the city's inhabitants, who recognize the bay as a symbol of identity, among others.

Keywords : Ecosystem services; cultural services; economic valuation; contingent valuation.
