Cars in rental fleets are subjected to an intense work regime. This intensity causes them a quickly degradation and their renovations in short periods of time. However, it is possible to monitor their condition if simple and inexpensive methods are available. This paper aims to show a way to monitor de degradation of cars in rental fleets through the availability indicator as a method of detecting those whose exploitation is unacceptable due to its negative impact on the economic result. For this, the availability threshold, which represents the tradeoff between the favorable and unfavorable impacts of the operation of the cars on the economic result, is used and border between operation and maintenance is introduced in the determination of the prevalence of the idle time and out of service time in the unfavorable economic impact. The application to a fleet illustrate the possibilities of the proposal in real conditions and the feasibility of the method is demonstrated despite the short time of permanence of the cars in the fleet.
