Innovating the activity of the university professor implies achieving in a planned and intentional way to change their ways of thinking and acting, according to the purpose of teaching students to learn so that they can face the transformations in a pertinent manner in any professional space. To this end, the teacher must innovate his own practice, which presupposes a change of paradigm of the university teacher in order to focus his activity on learning. If it is assumed that an innovative and creative university professor is characterized by teaching content to students, making it possible for them to search for information for learning. The objective of the present work consists of proposing an alternative that articulates the methodological work and the professional improvement to transform the teacher into an innovator of his own practices. The advantages and possibilities that Cuban universities have established to improve teaching competences related to methodological work, postgraduate education, teaching scenarios, information and communication technologies, flexibility of programs and study plans that make possible the teacher's innovation to facilitate the student's learning are used. Theoretical and empirical research methods are used to organize an alternative that combines options to achieve the transformation of a traditional university professor into an innovative one.
