Abstract

The use of autologous platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is effective in stimulating regeneration processes of damaged tissues, such as facial lipoatrophy, which is characterized by the reduction of facial subcutaneous adipose tissue and frequently affects people living with HIV. However, reports of the use of PRP in people living with HIV are not frequent and in general the description of adverse events related to their applications and ozone use in different pathologies is also unusual. A 55-year-old male patient, diagnosed with HIV seropositive in 2002 and with clinical manifestations of facial lipoatrophy, was included in a study evaluating the effect of the application of ozonized PRP for the treatment of facial lipoatrophy. The patient received a total of six applications separate for 45 days each one. Safety was assessed by monitoring some clinical laboratory parameters and physical examination of the patient before and after each intervention. In the fifth application of the ozonized PRP, the patient presented an inflammation in the treated area of greater intensity and duration than expected. This manifestation was exacerbated in the next application, so the treatment was interrupted. The sign disappeared between the fourth and fifth day after last treatment. No modifications of the clinical parameters evaluated were observed. The PRP and ozone use have proven to be safe and effective, however in some cases adverse events of hardwood intensity such as inflammation can occur and aggravated if treatment is not interrupted.
