Freshwater ecosystems are important sources of freshwater and essential resources for the development of different economic activities. Monitoring the water quality of these systems is important for their preservation and to prevent risks to human health. The present work addresses the main aspects reported in the literature related to the monitoring of water quality in superficial freshwater ecosystems. Examples of research carried out in different parts of the world are analyzed, illustrating the aspects to be taken into account during water quality monitoring, particularly the case of the Almendares River (Havana, Cuba), which has been evaluated for a period of more than 15 years.
Keywords : freshwater ecosystems; water quality indicators; contamination; monitoring; water quality.
