Abstract

GARCIA-MUENTES, Segundo Alcides et al. Physicochemical properties of oil and biodiesel produced from Jatropha curcas L. in the province of Manabí, Ecuador. Rev Cub Quim [online]. 2018, vol.30, n.1, pp. 142-158. ISSN 2224-5421.

In this work the physicochemical properties of oil and biodiesel are determined, from the seed of Jatropha curcas L. originating in the province of Manabí, Republic of Ecuador. The transesterification reaction was carried out with a molar ratio methanol-oil 6: 1 and 1 % by weight of sodium hydroxide (NaOH), as a catalyst. The determination of the properties of the oil and biodiesel obtained included ASTM standards. The physical-chemical evaluation performed of Jatropha curcas L. oil, including kinematic viscosity at 40 oC, (30,85 mm2/s), density at 15 oC, (938 kg/m3), acid number, (2,73 mg KOH/g), inflammation temperature (160 oC) and iodine number, (99 g I2/100 g) concludes that the oil of each region has its own special characteristics. An oil with good physicochemical characteristics will have the potential to be a source of biodiesel. Jatropha curcas L. oil from the province of Manabí, Ecuador, has these characteristics.

Keywords : oil; biodiesel; transesterification; Jatropha curcas L.
