Abstract

LOPEZ-VEGA, Maria Elena; RAMIREZ-GONZALEZ, Surey  and  SANTOS-HERRERO, Ronaldo. Prediction of leachate generation in sanitary landfills of Urban Solid Waste in Santa Clara city. Cuba. RTQ [online]. 2021, vol.41, n.1, pp. 47-59.  Epub Mar 28, 2021. ISSN 2224-6185.

An important aspect of Urban Solid Waste Management is the knowledge of the characteristics of the leachates in terms of physical-chemical parameters, as well as volumes generated. All this contributes in many cases to the decision making for future landfill projects and leachate treatment plants. Such is the case of the city of Santa Clara, where there is no controlled landfill, although there are plans for its construction. For this reason, the estimation of leachate generation and the Pollutant Load (PL) was calculated using the Swiss Method, which is based on data on the composition of the waste, soil of the landfill area, as well as climatological data. The results show flow rates that can fluctuate between (8500-130000) m3 / month, with Pollutant Load (PL) between (60-100) kg / h. The results are of great help for the future design and construction of the final disposal site for urban waste and the leachate treatment plant.
