ARTURO PEREZ -DE VERA, Andy et al. Substitution of aluminium silicate by calcium carbonate in paint production. RTQ [online]. 2021, vol.41, n.1, pp. 157-173. Epub Mar 28, 2021. ISSN 2224-6185.
ABSTRACT
Water-based emulsified paint has become very popular worldwide. In its formulation, aluminum silicate has marked significance, but it is an imported filler with a high cost in the international market, which limits the production of these paints. Therefore, the objective of the present work is to highlight a substitution using calcium carbonate, the main paint and coatings spreader, of national production. Consequently, it was decided to evaluate the replacement of aluminum silicate by calcium carbonate in the production of paint, so that it complies with the established quality parameters. For this, the behavior of the paint under study was evaluated according to its current formula and compared with the modified paint. In order to evaluate the quality of the paint obtained, tests were carried out such as viscosity, degree of dispersion, density, pH, stability, resistance to wet rubbing, covering power and non-volatile matter, following the test methods reflected in the Cuban Standards. No test was negative to carry out the substitution. In terms of resistance to wet rubbing, the proposed paint doubles in value to the standard one, improving its performance with excellent washability and resistance to weathering. The economic savings that the Vitral Paints Company means to implement this substitution is calculated, yielding a value of $ 388.14 for every 1 000 L of paint produced.
