Abstract

Introduction:

Suicide rates are high in patients with depressive disorders who suffer from comorbidities because of their condition, which affects their quality of life and, in most cases, suicidal behavior appears. The objective this work was to evaluate the quality of life of patients with depression and suicidal behavior, hospitalized in the psychiatry ward of Manuel Fajardo Hospital over the year 2019.

Methods:

A retrospective, descriptive longitudinal study was carried out at the psychiatry ward of Manuel Fajardo Hospital, from January to December, 2019. A non-probabilistic sample was used as convenient, composed of 50 patients diagnosed with depression and suicidal behavior.

Results:

Over 30% of the sample included ages from 21 to 30 years. 50% of both sexes showed a suicidal behavior. According to Hamilton scale for depressed patients with suicidal behavior, 62% of them showed moderate depression, followed by 22,5% with mild depression. As conclusions the quality of life of the patients with depression and suicidal behavior evaluated was deteriorated. 80% of patients with depression showed suicidal behavior, ages from 21 to 30 years being more frequent. Depression brings about changes in the patient’s capacity to perceive reality; then, they see no meaning or future in their lives, which affects their quality of life.
