Abstract

ALVAREZ CRUZ, Jagger Rafael  and  JIMENEZ GUETHON, Reynaldo Miguel. Cultural Consumption in Cuba. Recommendations to Social Policy Regarding Cultural Participation. Estudios del Desarrollo Social [online]. 2021, vol.9, n.2  Epub July 01, 2021. ISSN 2308-0132.

The ideal of equity and social justice that governs the Cuban Social Model includes access to culture, and this is reflected in the documents that sustain social policy. The right to time dedicated to activities that concern cultural participation is endorsed under concepts such as: free time, recreation, leisure, cultural consumption... However, the challenge always lies in fully putting these progressive ideals into practice. This paper presents the systematization of 34 researches on cultural participation and consumption, carried out in the decade 2008-2018. The main results show the existence of social groups that are at a disadvantage, including women, adolescents and young people, people with depressed social and cultural capitals, and residents of peripheral localities. It concludes with proposals made to social policies referred to cultural participation by the authors in order to transcend the existing inequalities in this regard.

Keywords : cultural consumptions; social inequalities; cultural participation.
