The type of tourism whose main motivation is faith, also called “religious tourism”, moves thousands of people in the world to visit sacred places. Likewise, non-religious people are attracted to these destinations out of curiosity or in order to acquire historical-cultural knowledge. The present study aims to reveal how small towns can use religious tourism as a contribution to sustainable local development. From the methodological point of view, this investigation, due to its characteristics, is exploratory, descriptive and qualitative. It was carried out on the basis of a bibliographic review and visits to observe the places, employing open interviews. Two small towns were studied, in Brazil, Lunardelli, the Sanctuary of Santa Rita de Casia. In Cuba, the analysis centres on El Rincón, the town where the San Lázaro National Sanctuary is located.
Keywords : religious tourism; local development; pilgrimage; sanctuary.
