Abstract

NOVAL-BAUTISTA, Luis Alain de la; CONTRERAS-MEDINA, Fernando Ramón  and  MONTERO-SANCHEZ, David. Patterns of Citizen Participation in Cuban Radio. An Approach from Communication for Social Change. Estudios del Desarrollo Social [online]. 2022, vol.10, n.3  Epub Dec 01, 2022. ISSN 2308-0132.

Recent political events in the Cuban media context seem to be shaping a transformative commitment, with information and communication being explicitly recognized as rights and public goods. Media are, among other things, acknowledged as potent tools that must enable active citizen participation. This article examines the levels of citizen participation within Cuban radio. It builds upon qualitative research based on 18 focal groups and more than forty extensive interviews with professionals and audience members. Theoretically, the text mobilizes a number of contributions from Communication for Social Change as a theoretical field, particularly when it comes to conceiving participation as power redistribution mechanism. Findings point towards perceived deficits still preventing meaningful social participation in the context of Cuban radio.

Keywords : communication; participation; citizenship; radio; media literacy.
