Abstract

FERNANDEZ URIARTE, Lucila  and  PUJOL BONANI, Santiago. For what and why we design. ARCIC [online]. 2021, vol.10, n.27, pp. 139-153.  Epub Dec 01, 2021. ISSN 2411-9970.

It seems that industrial design is currently an activity that has lost its importance. Although until some time ago it was a practice committed to the transformation of man and the environment, in developed countries it has become a technical, pragmatic profession that gains prestige by increasing company profits. The purpose of this essay is to reflect on what has happened so that a century of testing in the field of design, such as the 19th century, and another such as tha 20th of full development with accumulated ideology, has also led to such an incomprehensible current crisis. Likewise, it is necessary to analyze the situation of Cuban design, a reality not integrated into the industry, which has not been able to offer quality products to the population, despite several decades of effort. To try to understand what happened to design in the world and also in our country, a bit of historical analysis is necessary.

Keywords : design; development; modernity; industry; functionality.
