Abstract
ALVAREZ - ESCUDERO, Lourdes et al. Update of annual and daily cycles, and spatial distribution of thunderstorms in Cuba. Rev. Cubana Met. [online]. 2023, vol.29, n.3 Epub Sep 01, 2023. ISSN 2664-0880.
The characterization of the behavior of thunderstorms is a fundamental aspect in the evaluation of the level of risk and vulnerability in a country or region. The objective of the present work is to update the maps of spatial distribution and the study of the annual and daily cycles of occurrence of storms and number of days with storms for the period 2005 - 2019, for which weather information code reports are available, present and past, obtained from weather stations in Cuba. The spatial distribution varied very little with respect to previous studies where the series of analyzes ended in 2016 and only the minima of activity were slightly accentuated. The maximum occurrences were found south of Pinar del Río, center of the Mayabeque and Matanzas provinces, center of Ciego de Ávila and mountainous regions of the eastern region of the country. The annual cycle shows maxima in the summer months with an absolute maximum in August. The daily cycle shows more activity in the afternoon with a maximum between 16:00 and 18:00 local time.
