An analytical and retrospective cross-sectional study was carried out at the "Julio Legón Padilla" Gynecoobstetric Teaching Hospital in Pinar del Rio from August, l997, to January, l998, in order to know more about prolonged pregnancy in our environment. 309 expectants with prolonged pregnancy (study group) and 300 with gestation between the 37th and the 41st week (control group) took part in this study. Variables such as: incidence, way in which labor began, type of birth, causes of induction and of caesarean and morbidity of the newborns, were studied. Data were analyzed in simple and contingency tables and percentage and Chi square were applied with a signification level of p < 0.05. The main results were: incidence of 9.ll % of prolonged pregnancies and, in this entity, caesarean was 5.24 times more frequent than in induced labor. The fundamental causes of caesarean were: acute fetal suffering, failed induction and head-pelvic disproportion. Neonatal morbidity was 0.97 %. There was a fetal death before delivery.

Keywords : PREGNANCY, PROLONGED; LABOR; LABOR, INDUCED; DELIVERY; CAESAREAN SECTION.
