Abstract

A prospective descriptive study of the multiple pregnancies that occurred in the year 2000 in "Julio R. Alfonso Medina" teaching gynecological and obstetric hospital in Matanzas province was made. The total number of births was 3 022 that year and the sample was made up of 34 patients with multiple pregnancy. Incidence rate was 1,12% broken down in 33 twin deliveries (1,09%) and one triplet (0,03%). All deliveries were institutionalized. The cost of hospitalization corresponding to this type of pregnancy was estimated up to 29 days and 30 days and over; also the cost by type of delivery and the cost of the most used drugs, antibiotics and antimicrobials were calculated. The diseases or nosologic entities found in multiple pregnancies are listed. Primary data were collected from a tailored-made register book and results were expressed as percentages.
