Abstract
RODRIGUEZ DOMINGUEZ, Pedro Lorenzo; HERNANDEZ CABRERA, Jesús and REYES PEREZ, Adriana. Low birth weight: Some factors associated with the mother . Rev Cubana Obstet Ginecol [online]. 2005, vol.31, n.1, pp. 0-0. ISSN 1561-3062.
A descriptive and retrospective study was conducted to identify some maternal elements involved as incidents in low birth weight among 59 cases analyzed from 2001 to 2003. They were compared with a similar group of newborn infants with normal weight from the primary health care area of "José Jacinto Milanés" polyclinic, in Matanzas, that was obtained by simple random sample in the same period of time and place. The associations of each group were studied by using the following variables: age, nutritional evaluation, weight gain, hypertensive disorders, obstetric history and smoking. The Chi square test was applied to determine the statistical significance level. Some of the factors markedly related to low birth weight newborn infants were: maternal malnutrition, poor transgestational weight gain, previous child with less than 2500 g, arterial hypertension and smoking.
