Abstract

FUENTES GONZALEZ, Leonardo  and  ENRIGUEZ DOMINGUEZ, Bárbara. Puerperal hysterectomy: A 14-year study. Rev Cubana Obstet Ginecol [online]. 2005, vol.31, n.1, pp. 0-0. ISSN 1561-3062.

A retrospective, longitudinal and descriptive study was undertaken at "Julio Trigo López" Teaching Hospital aimed at characterizing puerperal hysterectomies between May 1989 and December 2002. The sample was composed of 99 patients for an incidence rate of 21.8 per 100 000 births. The cesarean section stood out as a risk procedure in 55.7 % of the cases. The main causes leading to hysterectomy were atonia in 28.2 % of the cases, followed by infection in 25.2 %. Only 25.2 % of the patients undergoing hysterectomy presented some kind of complication in the postoperative. The maternal mortality rate from puerperal hysterectomy was very low in the period studied, accounting for 1.1 per 10 000 births.

Keywords : Puerperal hysterectomy; descriptive epidemiology.
