Abstract

SIXTO BUSTELO, Guillermo; ZAYAS LEON, María Dolores; VALLE SANTANA, Gilda  and  RODRIGUEZ CARDENAS, Antonio. Perinatal results of intrauterine growth retardation. Rev Cubana Obstet Ginecol [online]. 2006, vol.32, n.1, pp. 0-0. ISSN 1561-3062.

Some characteristics of intrauterine growth retardation cases occurred in "America Arias” gynecological-obstetric hospital in the City of Havana were studied from January 1 st , 2003 to December 31 st , 2004. The respective clinical histories of 172 cases (live and dead newborns) diagnosed with intrauterine growth retardation at discharge were reviewed, and the selected risk factors were analyzed. The incidence of intrauterine growth retardation for this center was estimated at 2,1 %. The perinatal diagnosis matched with diagnosis at discharge by 66,3 %, which exceeds the reported figures in the literature. Among the main causes of morbidity were respiratory distress syndrome, metabolic disorders and sepsis whereas intrauterine anoxia and congenital malformations were the fundamental causes of perinatal mortality. The risk factors negatively affecting mortality included smoking and inappropriate maternal weight gain. It was finally suggested to continue the research and to increase the size of samples.

Keywords : intrauterine growth retardation; risk factors; prenatal diagnosis.
