Abstract

A descriptive study of 59 cases from the health area located in Milanes, which were seen in the three-year period 2001-2003, was conducted. The objective was to identify a number of national elements that may be maternal factors that mayu be involved in low birthweight. The studied variables were age, nutritional assessment, weight gain, hipertensive disorders, obstetric antecedents and smoking. Significantly associated factors to this problem were maternal malnutrition, low weight gain, having another child whose birthweight had been beloww 2 500g, hypertension and smoking.
