This paper was aimed at determining if mild chronic hypertension brings about a rise of maternal and perinatal morbimortality and also if it is fundamentally caused by overlapping of pre-eclampsia. One hundred and fifty patients suffering from mild chronic hypertension were studied, and their perinatal and obstetric results were compared with those of a control group of 150 normotensive pregnant women. This study group showed higher rates of preterm delivery (14.7 %), overlapped pre-eclampsia (30 %), retroplacental hematoma (5,3 %), newborn weighing less than 2 500g (16.7 %), fetal undernourished fetus (7.3 %) and perinetal mortality (47 x 1000) than the controls. The rise of morbidity was almost exclusively at the expense of patients presenting with overlapped pre-eclampsia since those pregnant women who did not develop this disorder showed indicators comparable to those of the control group. Mild chronic hypertension represents a risk of negative obstetric and perinatal effects, but mainly associated to pre-eclampsia.
