INTRODUCTION: In Cuba there is a Program for the Early Diagnosis of Cervicouterine Cancer achieving good results although a lack of mastery in carrying out of organic cytology by part of staff initiating its work in consulting rooms. OBJECTIVE: To increase the knowledge by means of an educational intervention for the novel staff in consulting rooms, related to this program particularly in practice of organic cytology. METHODS: A quasi experimental and intervention study was conducted in health area of Nuevitas municipality during 2008 and 2009; universe included 173 professionals working in consulting rooms, sample included 27 from them 19 are internists and 8 are nurses. Variables reflected in a survey expressed mainly the knowledge on the organic cytology technique; data were processed in Excel showed in statistic tables. RESULTS: The knowledge on this program had difficulties mainly in the contents related to the abovementioned technique, in the novel staff; noting that the 64.9 % of the non-useful cytologic tests corresponded to the study group; after implementation the intervention using the simulator it was possible to increase the knowledge, particularly in abilities related to the development of such technique. CONCLUSIONS: The professionals of new incorporation to consulting rooms have not mastery in cytology technique; using the simulator were created abilities in its performance in all trained.
