Abstract

SUAREZ GONZALEZ, Juan Antonio et al. Influence on pregestacional obesity on the pre-eclampsia/eclampsia risk. Rev Cubana Obstet Ginecol [online]. 2013, vol.39, n.1, pp. 3-11. ISSN 0138-600X.

Introduction: obesity is one of the maternal conditions which frequently complicate pregnancy and childbirth. Objective: to determine the influence of obesity on maternal and perinatal outcomes of pregnant women at risk of preeclampsia/eclampsia. Methods: analytic and ambispective study at Mariana Grajales University Hospital in Santa Clara, Villa Clara province, in 2010. A group of pregnant women at preeclampsia/eclampsia risk were studied. They had started their pregnancy with a body mass index above 25.6% (overweight and obese) comparing the results with a group of non-obese patients Results: 67 patients had a diagnosis of overweight (18.2 %) and 70 (19.1 %) were obese, with risk factors such as multiparity, prior and current low calcium intake, and chronic stress. The 0.93 waist-hip with mean was highly significant for cardiovascular risk. Complications during pregnancy: hypertensive disorders (71.5 %) and gestational diabetes (49.6 %); at childbirth, uterine incoordination (72.2 %) and dystocia (35.7 %); at postpartum period: anemia (82.4 %) and hypertensive disorders (62.7 %). Cases of preeclampsia and worsened eclampsia were present among obese pregnant women. Among perinatal complications, slight predominance of preterm delivery and fetal macrosomia in obese patient group were found. Conclusions: prior pregnancy obesity influences maternal and perinatal outcomes and the risk of preeclampsia/eclampsia, placing these pregnant women in a high risk group, requiring specialized care during pregnancy, childbirth and postpartum period.
