Abstract

CESPEDES MIRANDA, Ela M; HERNANDEZ LANTIGUA, Ingrid  and  LLOPIZ JANER, Niurka. Enzimas que participan como barreras fisiológicas para eliminar los radicales libres: II. Catalasa. Rev Cubana Invest Bioméd [online]. 1996, vol.15, n.2, pp. 0-0. ISSN 1561-3011.

Oxygen's reactive species are involved in cellular damage; however, in the organism there is a protection system composed of compounds and antioxidant enzymes that participate in the transformations of such species. The catalase is one of the enzymes involved in the destruction of hydrogen peroxide, generated during cellular metabolism. Its structural characteristics as well as its role in some physiopathologic situations are dealt with in the present article.

Keywords : FREE RADICALS; CATALASE [chemistry]; REACTIVE OXYGEN SPECIES.
