Abstract

ESPINOSA, Ivette et al. Biochemical and antigenic characterization of different Gardnerella vaginalis isolations. Rev Cubana Invest Bioméd [online]. 2005, vol.24, n.2, pp. 0-0. ISSN 1561-3011.

Diverse isolations of Gardnerella vaginalis with differences in the biochemical pattern, which were associated or not with the presence of symptoms of bacterial vaginosis, were identified for the first time n Cuba. There have been described phenotypical variations of Gardnerella vaginalis related to biochemical tests that have allowed to classify this species in different biotypes that in some cases are connected or not with bacterial vaginosis. The biotype 1 was the commonest, for which the hypurate hydrolisis, the b galactosidase and lipase activity were positive. Antisera were obtained in rabbits from 2 strains of Gardnerella vaginalis corresponding to biotypes 1 and 4, which showed a different behavior by immunoblotting against isolations corresponding to different biotypes. This suggests the possibility of a serological differentiation between isolations of Gardnerella vaginalis.

Keywords : Gardnerella vaginalis; biotype; immunoblotting; proteins.
